A subclass 309 applicant that is currently in Australia on a visitor visa is not able to get a bridging visa.
To lawfully stay in Australia, they must keep re-applying for an onshore 600 Visitor visa when the current one is reaching expiry.
During Covid-19 travel restrictions a subclass 309 visa can be granted without needing to leave Australia.
At some stage after Covid-19 travel restrictions are removed, the relaxation on subclass 309 requirements will return to normal.
