2025/26 Australian Minimum Wage.
On 3 June 2025, the Fair Work Commission announced it will raise the national minimum wage by 3.5% from 1 July 2025, taking the permanent workers minimum wage to $24.95 per hour, or $948.00 a week for full-time workers.
The new National Minimum Wage will apply from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2025. This means if your weekly pay period starts on Wednesday, the new rates will apply from Wednesday 2 July 2025.
Casual Workers minimum wage 2025/26.
The national minimum wage for a casual employee over the age of 21 is $31.17 per hour. This includes an extra 25% to cover Holiday and Sick pay, that a casual worker does not receive.
A full time permanent worker (38 hours per week) that takes 4 weeks holiday per year, 5 sick days, will receive $49,281.44 during the year. (52 weeks x 38 hours x $24.95)
A casual worker, working the same hours would receive $55,669.62. (47 weeks x 38 hours x $31.17)
Australian workers under the age of 21 must be paid at least a specific percentage of the Adult Minimum Wage.
Minimum wages for young workers are calculated as a percentage of the national minimum wage. This table shows the minimum rate you can be paid, depending on your age.
These percentages are:
- 36.8% for those under 16.
- 47.4% for those aged 16.
- 57.8% for those aged 17.
- 68.3% for those aged 18.
- 82.5% for those aged 19.
- 97.7% for those aged 20.
Who Decides on the Minimum Wage in Australia?
The Fair Work Commission is responsible for reviewing and setting minimum wages for employees in the national workplace relations system.
The annual wage review is generally conducted in the second half of the financial year, from March to June.
The Fair Work Commission Expert Panel is made up of the President, three other full-time members and 3 part-time members.
The rate of inflation may have an effect on the amount of any increase.
