500 New Visa Decision Officer positions were announced at the Jobs and Skills Summit in September 2022.
By the end of November 2022, 285 of these 500 Visa Decision Officer positions had been filled and staff had commenced.
The immigration minister Andrew Giles had stated that the government will spend $36.1m to clear the visa backlog by increasing department staff by 500 over the next nine months.
This means the commitment was to add 500 extra visa staff by June 2023.
What we don’t know is how many new staff the department normally employs to cover normal staff changes during each year.
The real questions are:
How many visa decision staff were employed at the start of September?
and
How many visa decision staff were employed at the end of November?
The difference is the real change.
