Is Austudy available for New Australian residents?
One of the requirements, to be eligible to claim Austudy, is the requirement to be an Australian resident and in Australia on the day that an Austudy claim is made.
However, if you have recently arrived as a resident in Australia, you may have to wait to get this payment.
Many benefit payments have a residency period requirement, which can be up to 4 years, for most applicants.
If the permanent residence visa, or specified visa subclass, was granted on or after 1 January 2019, there is a 4 year waiting period for Austudy.
This means eligibility begins 4 years after becoming Permanent Resident.
If the visa was granted before 1 January 2019, there was a 2 year waiting period for Austudy.
