The cost of smoking in Australia is increasing, but the physical amount being smoked is reducing.

According to a report in March 2021, there was a reduction of 1 billion cigarettes sold in 2017, when compared to 2016.
However, the cost, for the reduced number of cigarettes sold, rose by $1 billion in that year.

$14.5 billion on 14 billion cigarettes.
$2.8 billion on other tobacco, including roll your own.

2016
$13.7 billion on 15 billion cigarettes.
$2.5 billion on other tobacco, including roll your own.

Change in cost of cigarettes.
$1.04 per cigarette in 2017.
$0.91 per cigarette in 2016.
