To increase the available amount of fuel, the Australian government is temporarily reverting back to the fuel standards in force before December 2024.

From 15 December 2024, the maximum sulphur content of Australian fuel was reduced from 50 ppm down to 10 ppm.

From March 2026, this reverts back to the 50 ppm in force between 2008 and 2024.

The 50 ppm fuel is still considered high quality by global standards, but represents a temporary step back from Australia’s new (2024) 10 ppm requirement.

This will add 100 million litres of fuel per month to the domestic market.

This initiative allows the higher sulphur fuel to be sold locally, rather than exported, focusing on regional areas.
