Starting School in Queensland

Schooling in Queensland begins, for most children, with the Preparatory Year of school, “Prep”, which is normally 9am to 3pm, for 5 days per week.

Prep is NOT compulsory, but most children, about 97%, do attend.

  • To attend Prep a child must be at least 4 years and 6 months old at the beginning of the year, AND, they must turn 5 years old before the 30th June of that year. Note: Special consideration may be given to children from interstate or overseas who meet legislated criteria.

After the Prep year, children will start Year One and remain in Primary School until the end of Year Seven.
