Australian citizenship application fees are being increased on 1 July 2021.

The new rates are:

  • $490 for citizenship by conferral application, up from the $285 set in 2016.
  • $315 for citizenship by descent, up from $230 set in 2016.
  • $300 for a child not included in a parent’s application, up from $180.

A statement from the Immigration department:

This is the first change to citizenship application fees since 2016 and has been determined by citizenship application processes and costs.”

Update 6 July 2021:

This rise, for citizenship by conferral to $490, is actually equivalent to a 6.55% per year increase over the last 10 years, from the $260 cost in 2011. (see comment below)

  2. Some comments from prospective new citizens indicate that the increase will be minimal in the scheme of things.

    One said “citizenship means reduced fees for studies.”

    Another said “What’s another $200 after paying $10,000 to get the visa.”

  3. An annual increase of 11.145% since the last change, would have shown these Citizenship application fees.

    2016 = $285
    2017 = $317
    2018 = $354
    2019 = $395
    2020 = $440
    2021 = $490

    Unfortunately, the Government did not increase these fees annually, and now people see one single, very big, increase.

    1. It has been brought to my notice that the cost of a citizenship application in 2011, ten years ago, was $260.

      If this cost had risen by 6.55% every year, then the cost in 2021 would be $490, which is actually what it is now.

      The annual application would have been:

      • 2011 : $260.00
      • 2012 : $277.00
      • 2013 : $295.00
      • 2014 : $315.00
      • 2015 : $335.00
      • 2016 : $357.00
      • 2017 : $380.00
      • 2018 : $405.00
      • 2019 : $432.00
      • 2020 : $460.00
      • 2021 : $490.00

      In my view, it would have been more sensible to have increased slowly each year, rather than jump from $285 to $490, in go.

      In 2011 it was $260
      In 2016 it was $285 (a 1.85% per year increase)
      In 2021 it is $490 (an 11.145% per year increase)

      However, even though I feel that annual rises would be more sensible, I am glad they didn’t, having only had to pay $285 in 2020 for my wife’s Citizenship application.

  4. From July 2021 the new Citizenship application fee is $490.

    The New Resident Return Visa fee is $410.

    It is now $80 more expensive to become a citizen, than it is to get a single RRV to be able to leave and return to Australia.

    Not ‘too’ bad, but opponents of this increase are saying that migrants may forgo Citizenship as it is too expensive.

    Some are saying it could deter people from seeking citizenship.

    The alternative is to remain as a PR for life, and pay for an RRV when travelling overseas.

    An RRV costs $410, and lasts for a maximum of 5 years, and increases in cost every time you need one.
