Refusal rate for Australian Protection Visas.
An Australian parliamentary report into education and migration agents in Australia found that in the 2016-17 financial year 26,247 Malaysians lodged protection visa applications.
Of those protection visa claims, only 168 were successful.
That means that 26,079 were refused, or otherwise not granted.
The cost of processing these claims was calculated at $46 million to the Australian Taxpayer.
Applicants for an Australian protection visa must prove they have a well-founded fear of persecution in their own country, and that their civil liberty or life could be at risk if they were to be returned.
Without proving the above, the application can be refused.
