Fuel Price Increase, August 2025.
Australian fuel excise is a flat sales tax levied by the federal government on petrol and diesel.
Every February and August, the fuel excise is increased in line with inflation.
The increase, on petrol and diesel, from 1 August 2025, is an extra 0.8 cents per litre, taking it from 50.8 to 51.6 cents per litre.
This is estimated to be an extra 44 cents on an average tank of petrol for a private car filling up with 55 litres.
Electric Vehicle users may soon be paying a similar fee to use the roads in Australia.
The treasurer, Jim Chalmers, has said that “EVs at some point need to start paying their way, it’s an inevitability that they’re going to have to start paying taxes as petrol and diesel cars do today.”
