Working Holiday 2nd Year Visa – Specified areas.

People on the different classes of Working Holiday Visas (417 and 462) who wish to do a SECOND year, must abide by certain conditions which include the location in Australia that they must work in before applying for the 2nd visa. The regulations also specify the type of work to be undertaken.

From 1 July 2019, 417 and 462 visa holders who carry out 6 months of specified work in regional areas while on their second Working Holiday (subclass 417) visa or Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa may be eligible to apply for a third visa. Eligible types of work and regional areas will correspond with the requirements for the second visa.

417 Working Holiday 2nd Year Visa – Specified areas.

Holders of the subclass 417 Working Holiday visa can do their 3 months work, during their first year, in most areas of Australia, but NOT in the Australian Capital Territory.

    • Approved industries for specified work include: Plant and animal cultivation, Fishing and pearling, Tree farming and felling, Mining and Construction.

The Australian Capital Territory is not classified as part of regional Australia
​All of Norfolk Island is classified as part of regional Australia
​All of Northern Territory is classified as part of regional Australia
​All of South Australia is classified as part of regional Australia
​All of Tasmania is classified as part of regional Australia

​New South Wales ​excludes Sydney, Newcastle, the Central Coast and Wollongong, and is limited to postcode areas: 2311 to 2312, 2328 to 2411, 2420 to 2490, 2536 to 2551, 2575 to 2594, 2618 to 2739 and 2787 to 2899.

​​Queensland excludes the Greater Brisbane area and the Gold Coast, and is limited to postcode areas: 4124 to 4125,4133, 4211, 4270 to 4272, 4275, 4280, 4285, 4287, 4307 to 4499, 4510, 4512, 4515 to 4519 and 4522 to 4899.

462 Working Holiday 2nd Year Visa – Specified areas.

Holders of the subclass 462 Work and Holiday visa must complete three months of specified subclass 462 work in eligible areas of northern and regional Australia, to be eligible to apply for a second Work and Holiday visa.

To meet the three months’ specified work requirement you must actually work for the same number of days that a full-time employee would normally work in a three month (88 calendar day) period.
Voluntary work will not be accepted for the purpose of applying for a second Work and Holiday visa.

Not all vacancies advertised on the Harvest Trail website will qualify as specified subclass 462 work, or give you eligibility for a second Work and Holiday visa.

There are TWO classes of work types for the 462 visa, and they have different location restrictions.

  • Tourism and hospitality, Forestry and Fishing.
  • Plant and Animal cultivation

Work undertaken in the following areas of northern Australia in the ‘tourism and hospitality’, ‘plant and animal cultivation’, ‘forestry and fishing’ groups, is classed as eligible specified work for a second Work and Holiday visa.

  • Any location in the Northern Territory is available for the subclass 462 eligibility.
  • Locations that are north of the Tropic of Capricorn in Queensland are available for the subclass 462 eligibility. (No postcode under 4472 is included)
  • Locations that are north of the Tropic of Capricorn in Western Australia are available for the subclass 462 eligibility. (No postcode under 6537, other than 0872, is included)

There are more areas available for the ‘Plant and Animal cultivation only’ group.

These areas include all States and Territories, other than the ACT. All of South Australia and Tasmania are included together with large parts of all other States, other than the major city areas.

Queensland, for example, includes locations not much more than a 1 hour drive outside Brisbane.  The area around the Gatton campus of the University of Queensland is included for the subclass 462 visa eligibility.
