Australia’s acting Prime Minister, Richard Marles, defended the government’s decision to call for a ceasefire in the Palestinian-Israeli war that the Palestinian government in Gaza started on 7 October 2023.
His comments included:
“We need to be moving towards a humanitarian ceasefire, which is not one-sided. And that’s the position that we have taken.”
“We’ve also made it clear that in defending itself, it is critical that Israel acts in accordance with the rules of war.”
The previous ceasefire, agreed on to obtain the release of the hostages taken on 7 October 2023, ended early, when Hamas fired missiles into Israel about 1 hour before the time allowed for Hamas to produce a new list of hostages it proposed to release, to secure a further extension.
