National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).
The NAPLAN tests were first implemented in 2008. These national tests replaced previous state and territory tests for Years 3, 5 and 7 students.

Average age of Students in each State:
Due to the different starting ages that apply in each State, the average ages of children taking the NAPLAN tests also have differences.
Tas : age 8 years 11 months (Oldest)
Vic : age 8 years 9 months
ACT : age 8 years 8 months
NSW : age 8 years 7 months
SA : age 8 years 7 months
NT : age 8 years 6 months
WA : age 8 years 5 months
Qld : age 8 years 1 month (Youngest)
The above are examples of ages for the Year 3 groups in 2009.
If ever Queensland children are better than the rest of the country, then it will be a really noticeable event, as the average Queensland child is almost 1 year younger than their counterpart in tasmania for example.
