Fines for Speeding in Australia.

Speeding is not tolerated in most of Australia, and penalties are imposed very quickly for speeding offences.

Examples of these penalties, for private motor vehicles, for each Australian State, are as follows:

Australian Capital Territory

2015 Penalties for speeding in ACT

  • Less than 15 km/h over the limit: $215 + one point.
  • 15 to 30 km/h over the limit: $325 + three points.
  • 31 to 45 km/h over the limit: $664 + four points.
  • More than 45 km/h over the limit: $1,811 + six points

Demerit Points

Licence Suspension is automatic once you reach 12 points in 3 years, but the suspension period varies depending on the total points, ie:

  • 12 to 15 points = 3 months Licence Suspension
  • 16 to 19 points = 4 months Licence Suspension
  • 20 or more = 5 months Licence Suspension

New South Wales

2015 Penalties for speeding in New South Wales

  • Less than 10 km/h over the limit: $109 + one point.
  • 11 to 20 km/h over the limit: $254 + three points.
  • 21 to 30 km/h over the limit: $436 + four points.
  • 31 to 45 km/h over the limit: $835 + five points and three months suspension.
  • More than 45 km/h over the limit: $2,252 + six points and six months suspension.
  • Penalties are higher if in a School Zone.

Demerit Points

Licence Suspension is automatic once you reach 12 points in 3 years, but the suspension period varies depending on the total points, ie:

  • 12 to 15 points = 3 months Licence Suspension
  • 16 to 19 points = 4 months Licence Suspension
  • 20 or more = 5 months Licence Suspension

  • 13 to 20 km/h over the limit: $227 + three points.
  • 21 to 30 km/h over the limit: $379 + four points.
  • 31 to 40 km/h over the limit: $531 + six points.
  • More than 40 km/h over the limit: $1,062 + eight points and six month suspension.

Double demerit points apply in Queensland to drivers and motorbike riders who commit a second offence, where the speed limit is exceeded by 20km/h or more, within a 12 month period.

  • More than 45 km/h over the limit: $900 + 6 points

Licence Suspension may occur once you reach 4 points in one year, or 12 points in 3 years.:

  • 40 to 44 km/h over the limit: $627 + six points + 6 month suspension.
  • More than 44 km/h over the limit: $738 + eight points + 12 month suspension

Licence Suspension is automatic once you reach 12 points in 3 years with a minimum 3 month suspension.

Western Australia

2015 Penalties for speeding in Western Australia

  • Less than 9 km/h 2 penalty units ($100)
  • Between 9 and 19 km/h 4 penalty units ($200) + 2 points
  • Between 20 and 29 km/h 8 penalty units ($400) + 3 points
  • Between 30 and 40 km/h 16 penalty units ($800) + 6 points
  • More than 40 km/h 20 penalty units ($1,000) + 7 points
  • Based on each penalty unit being $50 at March 2015
