What is a Spouse in Australia

What is the Definition of a Spouse in Australia?.

The term ‘Spouse’ pops up in some legal forms, especially regarding Partner Visas for Australia, and confusion sometimes arises on what the word “Spouse” actually means.

Some countries, primarily those that have learnt English using the American way, define a Spouse as a member of a Legally Married couple.

In Australia though, the word “Spouse” defines a member of a couple that are living together as a couple, whether married or not.

The following image, from the Australian Tax Office, explains it from the Australian Government perspective.

Your spouse (as well as covering legally married members of a couple) includes another person (of any sex) who, although not legally married to you, lived with you on a genuine domestic basis in a relationship as a couple.
