The limit of 4,000 arrivals per week into Australia is not being changed.

Some people wanted restrictions reduced, so that more overseas arrivals would be permitted to enter Australia, while some others wanted to reduce the number even further.

At the National Cabinet meeting today, it was agreed “on the balance of risk” that the number of people allowed to return from overseas at present will remain at 4,000 per week.

  2. According to the Board of Airline Representatives of Australia (BARA), “Based on the current ability to return less than 4,000 Australians per week, often at only 30 passengers per flight, it would take some six months for the estimated 100,000 Australians still overseas” to return home.
And that assumes no other, new visa holder, takes any available flights.

Current figures allow about 16,000 per month.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, it was an average of about one million Australians that travelled overseas and returned home every month.
