Department of Australian Immigration, through the years.

Department of Australian Immigration Name Changes.

From the 20th December 2017, the Australian Government Department that deals with Immigration is called the Department of Home Affairs.

The Department of Home Affairs was first created on the 1 January 1901, but did not deal with Immigration. That was dealt with by the Department of External Affairs, also created on that date.

These two departments joined together on the 14th November 1919, under the new name: Department of Home and Territories.

On the 10th December 1928, this name was again changed to the Department of Home Affairs.

Between 1928 and 2017, there were twelve more name changes for this department, culminating on the 20th December 2017, when it was renamed again as the Department of Home Affairs.

Here is the history of the Immigration Department since Australian Federation.
