Some Visa classes require someone to provide an assurance of support, before the visa can be finally granted.
An Assurance of Support (AOS) is a commitment by someone to repay the Australian Government any welfare payments paid to migrants during the support period that they have entered the country under.
It is also to show the financial ability to support to that person to ensure that they do not require any social welfare payments from Australia.
Most AOS periods are for 2 years, but there is also a 10 year AOS period for Contributory Parent visa holders.
Most Skilled Visa holders no longer require an AOS (from 2007).
Currently Centrelink is the department that assesses the Australian resident’s capacity to provide the Assurance of Support.
