Liberal: Parental Leave v Labor: Child Care

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says the Coalition’s paid parental leave scheme would cost more than childcare payments to families.

The Coalition’s paid parental leave scheme will pay a parent 26 weeks’ leave at full replacement salary. The payment is capped at $75,000.

Childcare benefit is means-tested and is only available to families who earn less than $170,000 a year.
Childcare rebate is available to all families with children in child care. It covers 50 per cent of out-of-pocket expenses and is capped at $7,500 a year per child.
