Visitor Visa Delays in May June 2022

Delays in issuing Australian Visitor Visa.

Some applicants for an Australian Visitor visa, are reporting that they have been waiting for weeks, and some for months, without hearing anything about their application, and are unable to check with immigration on the status of their application.

The Department of Home Affairs has referred to a 427% increase in visitor visa applications and stated that “All applications are assessed on a case by case basis and processing times can vary due to individual circumstance and whether or not the application lodged was incomplete or required further information.

A general statement on processing times includes the following:

Processing times are impacted each month by:

  • incomplete applications.
  • complex cases.
  • changes in application volumes.
  • changes to Ministerial Directions.

Processing times include applications lodged online and by paper.

For Visitors and Working Holiday Makers, in order to provide a better indication of processing times for new applicants, the processing time is calculated from the date they applied, if after border reopening, or the date an applicant became eligible to travel after Australia’s borders reopened, if they applied prior to border reopening.

The latest reported processing times for the subclass 651 eVisitor visas are:

  • 75% finalised within 1 day.
  • 10% took over 6 days.

The latest reported processing times for the subclass 600 Tourist visas have included these two sets of figures (both released in May, referring to March processing times):

  • 25% took under 8 days.
  • 25% took between 8 days and 26 days.
  • 25% took between 26 days and 63 days.
  • 15% took between 63 days and 20 months.
  • 10% took over 20 months.

And

  • 25% took under 1 day.
  • 25% took between 1 day and 6 days.
  • 25% took between 6 days and 26 days.
  • 15% took between 26 days and 37 days.
  • 10% took over 37 days.

The latest reported processing times for the subclass 600 Family Sponsored visas are:

  • 25% took under 26 days.
  • 25% took between 26 days and 36 days.
  • 25% took between 36 days and 45 days.
  • 15% took between 45 days and 50 days.
  • 10% took over 50 days.

Previous processing times were:

Median average processing time for Subclass 600 Tourist visas, that were finalised in February 2022, was 40 days.

  • 25% took under 15 days
  • 10% took over 20 months.

Median average processing time for Subclass 600 Tourist visas, that were finalised in January 2022, was 32 days.

  • 25% took under 15 days
  • 10% took over 11 months.
