Should English be a requirement for Citizenship?
The Australian citizenship test plays an integral role in ensuring that new citizens have “a basic knowledge of the English language and an understanding of Australia”
The Australian Multicultural Foundation has recommended that the Citizen Test be carried out in other languages, so that foreign language speakers can become Australian citizens much easier than before, presumably without needing to learn the language of Australia.
Most countries in the world require new citizens to be able to speak their national language.
This recommendation however, goes against the requirement to prove a basic English understanding during the citizenship process.
