Australian Visitor Visa Rejection Rate

90,000 Visitor Visas to Australia Rejected in a single year.

The above heading is from a 2016 news report.  90,000 sounds like a lot of Visa rejections, at first glance. But how bad is it really ?

That figure of 90,000 came from a calculation based on the Dec 2014 quarter Immigration statistics which show that 97.7% of all Visitor visa applications in that period were approved.
The actual wording was: “The grant rate for Visitor visas for the quarter ending 31 December 2014 remained stable at 97.7%

Using figures from the same report, we get a chart showing

  • 2010-11 3,649,128 Visitor Visa applications lodged. This would have been 83,930 rejections at that approval rate.
  • 2011-12 3,672,253 Visitor Visa applications lodged. This would have been 84,462 rejections at that approval rate.
  • 2012-13 3,873,313 Visitor Visa applications lodged. This would have been 89,086 rejections at that approval rate.
  • 2013-14 4,107,222 Visitor Visa applications lodged. This would have been 94,466 rejections at that approval rate.

The bottom line: Out of every 1,000 Visitor Visa applications, 977 would be approved, with just 23 rejected.
