An Australian resident may receive an infringement notice for $444.
Serious cases can lead to penalties of up to $444,000 and up to 10 years in jail.
The minimum penalty might be increased to $2,664 for some food products.
A temporary visa holder, aswell as receiving financial penalties, can also face visa cancellation.
During the last 12 months there have been 14 such visa cancellations since October 2019 under this new rule.
