Australian Visa Processing Times

Processing Times for Australian Visas.

The Australian Immigration department produce Visa Processing Times on a monthly basis.

These times normally comprise two figures, such as 15 – 21 months, and many people have been assuming that it means that the processing time for that particular visa will take between 15 and 21 months.

However, it does NOT mean that; although 15% of that visa class did take between 15 and 21 months for the month prior to the figure being released.

Note: These figures are taken from the previous Months actual processing.

It actually means that 75% (75 out of every 100) grants in the previous month, were processed in UNDER 15 months, and 10% (10 out of every 100) grants in the previous month, were processed in OVER 21 months.

Two examples to show how these ’15-21 months’ processing time figures could be created:

Example ONE, Visa Processing Time 15-21 months

  • 25 Visas were processed in 12 months
  • 25 Visas were processed in 13 months
  • 25 Visas were processed in 15 months
  • 10 Visas were processed in 16 months
  • 5 Visas were processed in 21 months
  • 10 Visas were processed in 22 months

The median average for that example, of 15-21 months, was 13 months, ie: Half took under 13 months, yet the times took between 12 months and 22 months.

Example TWO, Visa Processing Time 15-21 months

  • 25 Visas were processed in 5 months
  • 25 Visas were processed in 6 months
  • 25 Visas were processed in 7 months
  • 1 visa was processed in 15 months
  • 9 Visas were processed in 16 months
  • 5 Visas were processed in 21 months
  • 10 Visas were processed in 28 months

The median average for that example, of 15-21 months, was 6 months, ie: Half took under 6 months, yet the times took between 5 months and 28 months.

I personally feel that the Immigration department should produce a different time frame range, such as:

  • [12-13-15-21) ie: 25% took under 12 months, 50% under 13 months, 75% under 15 months and 90% under 21 months, and
  • [5-6-7-21] ie: 25% took under 5 months, 50% under 6 months, 75% under 7 months and 90% under 21 months.

Those would give a better indication of the two examples that I created above, much more descriptive than the 15-21 system that they use.
